Call for Nominations: CGA Standards Council

The CGA Standards Council is responsible for approving CGA publications and positions, as well as managing committee activities and resources. The Council approves all committee missions, guides committee activities, and assesses committee resources. Standards Council members play a key role in advancing CGA’s safety mission.

Collectively, Standards Council voting representatives shall have or have access to the technical expertise necessary to address all safety, environmental, and technical aspects managed by CGA’s technical committees.

General Qualifications

Candidates for the CGA Standards Council must be employed by a CGA member company in good standing. A candidate for Standards Council shall be a senior technical and/or safety person within their company and have the authority to establish their company’s position on CGA positions.

Competencies

Successful Council members demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of relevant industry issues and best practices.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to evaluate technical documents critically with high attention to detail.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with diverse teams of industry stakeholders.
  • Decision-Making: Capability to make informed and timely decisions.
  • Integrity: Ability to act in the best interest of the association, free from conflicts of interest.

Responsibilities

The CGA Standards Council is entrusted with a range of critical responsibilities that ensure the technical accuracy, credibility, and relevance of technical standards within the industry. Council member responsibilities include:

  • reviewing and approving CGA publications and other positions;
  • reviewing and approving committee requests to initiate, change, or discontinue work;
  • providing feedback on committee work processes and policies;
  • identifying appropriate experts to support committee work as needed;
  • attending Standards Council meetings regularly; and
  • serving as a liaison between Standards Council and assigned technical committees.

Time & Resource Commitment

  • CGA Standards Council voting members from non-major gas and equipment companies serve a three-year renewable term, with no term limit. Standards Council voting positions from major gas companies are continuous.
  • Council participation requires time to prepare for, travel to, and attend meetings.
    • The CGA Standards Council usually meets in person two times a year, typically in April in conjunction with the CGA Annual Meeting and in September at the CGA headquarters in McLean, Virginia.
    • The Council usually meets by web conference for two meetings per year, typically in June and December.
    • Additional meetings are scheduled as needed to address emerging issues.
    • Expenses related to travel and meeting attendance are the responsibility of each Council member.
  • Council members review an average of 65+ publications and other items that are balloted for approval each year.
  • Members of Standards Council may have additional committee and work item assignments (e.g., Incident Review Group) throughout the year.
  • Council members must be responsive to communications from CGA members and staff.

Nomination Process

The call for nominations for the CGA Standards Council is open. To submit a nomination, please provide the following information by August 15, 2024:

  • An interest statement (500 words or less) summarizing why you would like to serve on the CGA Standards Council; and
  • A curriculum vitae summarizing your education, technical expertise, relevant industry experience, and CGA participation history.

All nomination materials must be submitted to Laura Brumsey (LBrumsey@cganet.com) no later than August 15, 2024.

Standards Council will review all nominations received to determine the candidate(s) that will be presented for Executive Committee approval.
